Paging All Thespians: The Curtain is Set to Go Up On Fall High School Musicals

It’ll be “Almost Like Being in Love” when the lights go down and the curtain goes up on “Brigadoon,” one of this year’s lineup of fall high school musical productions.

We know our Canyons thespians pull out all the stops when it comes to their theatrical productions and this year they’re treating the community with a variety of musicals and something for everyone.

Corner Canyon High – “The Addams Family”

First out of the gate and fresh off the Halloween season will be Corner Canyon’s “The Addams Family” where you can catch Gomez and Morticia tangoing while Wednesday grapples with her new feelings for her boyfriend, which are pulling her away from her family’s love of all things macabre. It all falls apart and comes back together when Wednesday’s boyfriend and his parents join the Addams’ for dinner.

“The Addams Family” will light up the Corner Canyon Auditorium Nov. 9-11 and 13 at 7 p.m. A matinee is scheduled for Nov. 11 at 1 pm. Purchase your tickets here.

Jordan High – “Brigadoon”

If you’re not feeling the Halloween vibes, head over to join the Beetdiggers on a journey through the Scottish Highlands where two New Yorkers get lost on a hunting trip. While trying to find their way, they begin to hear music from a nearby village that does not appear on their map. Turns out, they may not even be in the same time period as they were when they entered the Highlands. Mystery, and of course, love, ensue as the two men learn about the mystifying village of Brigadoon and what they want in their own lives.

“Brigadoon” plays at Jordan High Nov. 9-11 and 13 at 7 p.m. A matinee is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Nov. 11. You can find more info here.

Alta High – “Mean Girls”

The Hawks will be making ‘fetch’ happen this month as they present, “Mean Girls the Musical” based on the popular movie and the book, “Queen Bees and Wannabes.” Cady Heron must navigate the jungles of high school after growing up on an African savanna. She becomes frenemies with Regina George, devising a plan to end Regina’s reign. Cady learns the hard way you can’t cross a queen bee without being stung and that, in the end, kindness rules all.

“Mean Girls” will don their pink Nov. 15-18 and 20 at 7 p.m. Join the cool kids and get your tickets here.

Hillcrest High – “Into the Woods”

After winning 1st place at the National Shakespeare Competition, Region Theatre Competition, State Theatre Competition, and being named Best Ensemble at the Utah High School Musical Theater Awards, the Huskies will go deep in the woods to search for “the cow as white as milk” and “the slipper as pure as gold.” Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack with his beanstalk will all seek their wishes in the woods. It’s the first time Hillcrest will attempt a score by Stephen Sondheim. Did we mention there will also be a full orchestra?

The Huskies will take on the witch, princes, and giants Nov. 30 – Dec. 2 and Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.

Brighton High – “White Christmas”

If you know Irving Berlin, they you know that “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing.” The Bengals will dance their way through the snow, or lack thereof, in the seminal classic production based on the 1954 film. Two Army Veterans turned successful producers find their former General owns a Vermont inn that isn’t doing so well. They join forces with a sister act and look to use their musical talents and call on their old Army pals to support the inn on Christmas Eve. Nothing will make your days merry and bright like this classic tale. The snow will fall in the Brighton auditorium Nov. 30 – Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. There will be a matinee on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.  Get your tickets to Pine Tree, Vermont.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
